What is a Lab Grown Diamond?
Lab-grown diamonds are physically and chemically identical to natural diamonds, but they have been created using tiny “diamond seeds” and carbon. The results are indistinguishable from natural diamonds, even to the most experienced jeweller! How Are Diamonds Grown in a Lab?
There are two methods currently used to produce lab fabricated diamonds: HPHT and CVD. In fact, it was the high pressure high temperature (HPHT) process that was used by General Electric to produce the first synthetic diamond in 1954.
HPHT works just as you’d probably expect, by adding extreme heat and pressure to a tiny diamond fragment (diamond seed) and carbon. These conditions cause the carbon to break up and crystallize onto the existing diamond, growing in a matter of weeks what the Earth produces in no less than 1 billion years.
Chemical vapour deposition (CVD) may also use a diamond seed, though it can be done with a solid carbon seed as well. These seeds are surrounded by carbon gas and superheated until the carbon precipitates onto the seed. It takes about 2 weeks to create a diamond from the CVD process, though another heat treatment is needed to change these from yellow to white diamonds.
