Peridot

Peridot

Peridot is a glowing green gemstone treasured since ancient times for its fresh, lively colour. It is a gem-quality variety of the mineral olivine and forms deep within the Earth, sometimes delivered to the surface by volcanic activity or meteorites. Peridot’s bright, yellow-green hue makes it a perfect symbol of renewal and positivity, as well as August’s birthstone. With a hardness of 6.5–7 on the Mohs scale, peridot is fairly durable for jewellery but should be protected from rough wear. Its vivid colour pairs beautifully with both white and yellow metals, making it an appealing and cheerful choice for engagement rings or bespoke creations.

Hardness: 6.5–7 (Mohs scale), suitable for regular jewellery with a protective setting in rings.

Colour: Ranges from yellow-green to olive green. The finest peridot displays an intense, pure green without brownish undertones.

Origin: Major sources include Arizona (USA), Egypt, Myanmar (Burma), China and Pakistan.

Notable Fact: Peridot was called the “gem of the sun” by ancient Egyptians and was believed to protect its wearer from nightmares and evil spirits.
