CJL Diamond Brokers traces its roots back to 1954 when it was originally established as Clowes Jewellers by Jack and Dorothy Clowes. Jack, a skilled watchmaker and goldsmith trained following the Second World War, opened the business in the heart of downtown Red Deer. Nestled on Ross Street in the historic Park Hotel building, Clowes quickly became a trusted name for fine jewellery and expert craftsmanship.

In 1978, Clowes was purchased by Len and Hilly Nederlof. Len played an active role in Red Deer's business community, serving as president of the Rotary Club, president of the Chamber of Commerce and vice president of the Red Deer Fair Association—now known as the Westerner. Under Len’s leadership, the business continued to grow and thrive, relocating to several locations throughout downtown Red Deer to better serve its expanding clientele.

By 1991, Clowes Jewellers had moved into Bower Place Shopping Centre, marking a significant step in the company’s evolution. Just a year later, Len Nederlof Jr. took over the business, continuing the family tradition and solidifying the company’s presence as a premier diamond and bridal destination in Central Alberta. Clowes became known for introducing prestigious brands to the Red Deer market, including Hearts On Fire, Tacori, Simon G and Verraggio, among many others.
