Lab-grown diamonds, also known as cultured diamonds, are a revolutionary alternative to traditional mined diamonds. These diamonds are created in a controlled laboratory environment, using advanced technology to replicate the natural diamond formation process.

By mimicking the conditions found deep within the Earth's crust, lab-grown diamonds are produced with the same physical, chemical and optical properties as mined diamonds. What sets them apart is their ethical and environmental advantages.

Lab-grown diamonds are priced up to 60 to 80 percent lower than their mined counterparts, making them an affordable and sustainable choice for those seeking a beautiful and high-quality gemstone. Moreover, they are free of many environmental and humanitarian concerns associated with diamond mining, such as deforestation, water pollution and human rights issues.

If you are shopping for a classic diamond engagement ring or looking for diamonds to use in other pieces of jewellery, consider the sparkling appeal of lab-grown diamonds that combine affordability, sustainability and peace of mind.

Are lab-grown diamonds real diamonds?

Yes. Lab-grown diamonds (also called lab-created, man-made, engineered, synthetic or cultured diamonds) are chemically, optically and physically identical to earth-mined diamonds. The process involves a tiny diamond “seed,” which can be either natural or lab-grown, and a specialised machine that promotes the deposition of carbon onto the seed structure.

Lab-created diamonds are real diamonds, not to be confused with cubic zirconia, moissanite, white sapphire or other look-alike gemstones. They are 100 percent pure crystallised carbon stones that are cut, polished and graded just like earth-mined diamonds.

They have the same refractive index, dispersion and hardness, and are graded to the same standards as mined diamonds by leading independent gemological institutes including IGI, GIA and GCAL.

Why do people choose lab-grown diamonds?

Since lab-created diamonds are not connected to the mining industry, buyers often feel more confident purchasing them from an ethical standpoint. In addition, lab-grown diamonds are more affordable than earth-mined diamonds, which allows buyers to get greater value within their budget.

Can you tell the difference between lab-grown and natural diamonds?

Not with the naked eye.

Lab-grown diamonds have the same chemical composition, crystal structure and physical properties as natural diamonds. Even professional jewellers typically cannot visually distinguish them using standard tools.

To reliably tell them apart, specialised laboratory equipment is required.

Comfort is one of the most important considerations when selecting wedding bands for him. Many rings feature a comfort-fit interior that gently curves along the inside of the band. This allows the ring to slide on more easily and makes it comfortable to wear throughout the day.

What is the resale value of lab-grown diamonds?

Lab-grown diamonds generally have lower resale value than natural diamonds.

However, they typically cost 30 to 70 percent less at the time of purchase, allowing buyers to choose:

  • A larger diamond
  • Higher clarity or colour grades
  • A more elaborate setting

Are lab-created diamonds graded and certified?

Yes. Lab-grown diamonds are graded using the same 4Cs system:

  • Cut
  • Colour
  • Clarity
  • Carat

Major institutes such as GIA and IGI provide certification identifying the diamond as lab-grown.

Are lab-grown diamonds environmentally friendly?

Lab-grown diamonds are often considered more environmentally friendly than traditional mining. They avoid impacts such as:

  • Large-scale earth removal
  • Habitat disruption
  • Mine waste
  • Long supply chains

However, they do require energy to produce, and their footprint depends on how that energy is sourced.
