How to Read a Diamond Grading Report

A diamond grading report can look technical at first glance. But once you understand what to focus on, it becomes one of your most valuable buying tools.

If you’re investing in a custom piece through our Custom Ring Design Experience, knowing how a diamond certificate is explained in plain English will help you compare options confidently.

What a Diamond Grading Report Actually Does

Independent grading labs evaluate diamonds using standardized criteria. The report documents measurable characteristics rather than assigning retail value. When reviewing a diamond grading report, start with the 4Cs.

Cut grade applies specifically to round brilliant diamonds and measures how well the stone reflects light. Cut is the biggest driver of sparkle. Even a high-carat diamond can look dull if the cut is poor.

Colour is graded on a scale from D to Z. D is colourless. As you move down the alphabet, warmth becomes more visible.

Clarity measures internal and external characteristics. Grades range from Flawless to Included. Many inclusions are microscopic and do not affect beauty to the naked eye.

Carat weight refers to size, but proportions matter more than number alone.

Fluorescence describes how the diamond reacts under ultraviolet light, measurements that confirm proportions and a plotted diagram marking inclusions.

The Gemological Institute of America and the International Gemological Institute are widely regarded as a benchmark for grading standards. Many buyers look for consistency in reporting, such as is found with documentation coming from the GIA and the IGI.

What Diamond Consumers Should Double-Check

When reviewing a certificate, confirm that the measurements align with the carat weight. Check that the cut grade is Excellent or Very Good if sparkle is your priority. Review fluorescence to ensure it aligns with your preferences.
